Grant from March of Dimes to Omaha Healthy Start at the Charles Drew Health Center Helps Moms and Babies in Omaha
Omaha, NE —The March of Dimes Nebraska Chapter has awarded a grant to the Charles Drew Health Center to support Omaha Healthy Start, a program that fills an unmet maternal/infant health need in the east and northeast sectors of Douglas County. This program will provide prenatal care, education about how to have a healthy pregnancy, and symptoms of preterm birth to 240 women in an area of Omaha that has an unusually high rate of infant mortality.
This grant is one of the ways the March of Dimes helps fulfill its mission to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.
“There are serious disparities in access to prenatal care and education in North Omaha”, said Mary Larsen, March of Dimes Director of Program Services. “We are grateful that our successful fundraising efforts, such as March for Babies, make it possible for us to support programs at Charles Drew that can help more babies be born healthy,” she said. “Omaha Healthy Start supports entire families before, during and after pregnancy, resulting in better birth outcomes for hundreds of babies”.
The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth.
