Join us for Cinco de Mayo 2009!

4/23/2009  (Page 1 of 1)

By Kevin Zach

For the 24th consecutive year, South Omaha will be the place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! In 2008 an estimated 40,000 people attended the weekend festivities.

Join us on Thursday evening, April 30, for the Noche de Charro Appreciation Banquet being held at the Mutual of Omaha Dome featuring Mexican cuisine and entertainment.

On Friday, May 1, the Cinco de Mayo Queen will be crowned at Hector's restaurant (154th and Pacific location).

On Saturday, May 2, the parade will kick off at 10 AM in the historic South 24th street business district followed by an all day fiesta and carnival. All of these activities will be in the vicinity of 24th and N Street.

In keeping with the tradition of selecting Five Grand Marshals, this year we will honor five local non-profit organizations that serve the South Omaha community. This year's honorees are:

- Catholic Charities

- Latino Center of the Midlands

- Omaha Public Library - South Omaha Branch

- The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

- South Omaha Community Care Council

On Sunday, May 3, start the morning with a refreshing 5k run / walk and then stick around for a classic car show and another chance to enjoy the fiesta and carnival.

The fiesta will feature authentic Mexican food and drink as well as live entertainment on two stages - the Main Stage and a Kid's Entertainment Stage.

Check out CincoDeMayoOmaha.com for all of the details.

Hope to see you there!
